Fisher First, But There's A Catch...

The good news for Sarah Fisher is that the Indianapolis racing fans have pushed her into the lead in the annual race for the IRL Crew Most Popular Driver Award (MPDA). The Commercial Point, Ohio native leapfrogged four other drivers in May's fan balloting,
facilitated by the IRL Crew, the Official Fan Organization of Indy Racing. Here's the catch - The MPDA rules state that a driver must compete in a minimum of three Indy Racing League events during one racing season in order to be eligible to win. To date, Fisher has subbed for Robbie Buhl at Nazareth, Pa., then teamed with he and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing at the Indy 500. It would appear that the defending (2001) IRL Crew Most Popular Driver Award winner has yet another reason to hope for a ride offer sometime soon.
Waiting in the wings in second place in the MPDA standings going into this weekend's Boomtown 500 at Texas Motor Speedway is Al Unser, Jr., the 2000 award winner. The balance of the top five: 3) Helio Castroneves, 4) Eddie Cheever, Jr., and 5) Sam Hornish, Jr.
Race fans at TMS can still vote for Sarah by visiting the IRL Crew display on the midway behind the front stretch grandstand.
